Golf for the People: Bethpage
and the Black: With the 2002 U.S. Open the world of golf
discovered Bethpage State Park and Tilly's masterpiece,
the Black Course. But for those in the metropolitan New
York area it was far more than a hidden gem - it was
and is golf's ultimate test. Yet that is but the beginning
of the story. This book traces the history of the founding
of Bethpage village in the 1680's where it is rumored
that the Prince of Wales demonstrated a delightful pastime
he had learned of himself just 8 years earlier named
golf, to the founder of Bethpage and the colonial governer
of New York on a piece of land that the local Indians
named "Rim of the Woods." Today this is the
13th fairway of the Black Course. It goes on to tell
the story of Robert Moses desire to build a park and
golf courses within and how despite the powerful
men of that era it almost didn't happen. Yet out of the
Great Depression the largest golf course construction
project ever conceived and built at one time arose from
an idea to holding a national championship in just over
three years time. This is the history of Bethpage and
the Black.
