The Course Beautiful is a collection of original articles, drawings
and photographs written by Albert Warren Tillinghast, considered
the Dean of American Golf Course Architects. In addition to Tillinghasts
genius as a designer of golf courses he was also a prolific author
writing for the leading golf journals of the 1920s and 1930s.
His articles were directed at the golfer rather than the architect
to inform them on the basic principles of golf course design.
In the 53 chapters Tillinghast reveals his secrets
on such subject as routing fairways, blind shots, contouring greens,
water hazards, greenside bunkers, rough, tees, trees on the golf
course, the par 3 and championship courses.
During his reign, Tillinghast designed and remodeled
an estimated 150 championship courses throughout the country. Among
them are some of the most famous ever produced including Baltusrol,
Winged Foot, San Francisco, Quaker Ridge, Somerset Hills, Newport
and Baltimore Five Farms.
The book is introduced with a foreword by Rees Jones,
one of todays outstanding modern day golf course architects.
There is also a chapter written by Dr. Philip Brown, Tillinghasts
grandson, in which he discusses the colorful lifestyle of his grandfather.
