Lakewood Country Club Celebrates Restoration
After a complete renovation of Lakewood Country Club’s Tillinghast design, the Club decided it was time to celebrate and honor all those involved. A.W. Tillinghast (a professional actor, Bill Batel) was there, too. But the highlight of event was a hole-in one by our own Ken Stofer on the par 3 signature 16th hole. The Tilly personality gave a short talk and impressed the group with his interpretation of the character with intrigue, interest and respect. His remarks about Tilly were respectfully amusing. Behind the restoration was famed architect, Steven Kay. Kay also attended the celebration and never a loss for words, conveyed compliments to Green Chairman Doug Miller and his committee for the co-operation and hard work of their Green superintendent Jim Noel and his Crew.
Lakewood CC retained Steven Kay to develop a multi-year master plan to restore their 18 hole course to Tillinghast's original design. Many of Tillinghast's design features had been lost over the years. Kay was able to restore many of Tillinghast's design features and design intent for the golf course. One of Tilly's trademarks was his great hazard found on many of his three shot holes.
Tilly's Great Hazard was restored on the par 5 sixth hole
